Estuary Perch...Tarwin River Highlights 20th May 2013

20 May 2013

I had a window of opportunity to fish the Tarwin River this morning with Shane Osbourne. Target..... Estuary Perch and test out Shane's new Lowrance HDS-7 structure scan.

Conditions were fine, overcast and cold. We launched our Hobie Revo 13's at the Tarwin River boat ramp just before 8am and headed up-stream with the last of the run in tide.

Our tackle consisted of an array of hard body lures for spinning and trolling ( Atomic 38 Crank, Bream Crank 38 Doublle Deep and StrikePro Vibes) as well as the usual suspects of soft plastics (Sqidgee 100 ml Wrigglers, Atomic 2" Grubs ).

The river had a lot of debris on the surface that had gathered up in the snaggy areas we know hold up good sized Estuary Perch. Finally Shane's technology identified a big piece of structure with fish around it. A Squidgee 100 ml Bloodworm Wriggler on a 2 gr Jighead got down deep in the current and a 42cm Perch was the result. A couple of smaller fish later, the weather turned for the worst and the heavens opened up.

Even though it was now the best section of the run-out tide to fish, it was time to make it for home, wet as a shag.

All in all, a pretty quiet day, but great to get out on the water!

Footnote: For boaters wishing to bait fish in the Tarwin, live Bass Yabbies are achieving good results 2-3kms above the bridge. Look for the deeper holes on your sounder.
