Great Holiday Fishing Opportunities: Gummy Sharks 27/12/2012

27 Dec 2012

The week leading up to the New Year is prime time to fish Sth Gippsland for Gummy Shark.

The areas to target them are the Venus Bay Beaches 1, 4 and 5, Mahers Landing and the entrance to Anderson Inlet.

From our diaries, the lead up to the full moon on Friday 28th and the following 4 days are the peak days to catch them up to 10 kg. And for those anglers not paticipating in the social side of new Years Eve, your will have the beach to yourself.

Survey the beach at low tide during the day to identify the holes and gutters along the beach. At low tide you will be to see where the water holes up and place markers in the sand dunes At night, using your torch you will see the markers to ensure you are fishing in the right spot.

The preferred set is the running sinker rig with a light setting on your drag. Fresh fish fillets are the best bait so it is always recommended to take a lighter set to fish for salmon, trevally and mullet.

Circle hooks are preferred as you will achieve a better hook up in the mouth rather than the gut. This is particularly important as the 10kg plus gummy shark will usually be females and you will be able to release them unharmed. To identify a male, it has claspers or elongated pelvic fin edges. View the link below and you will see the top image is the male.

The best time to fish for gummy shark landbased is from the top of the tide through the run out tide. Release your berley as the tide runs out to bring the fish into the hole you are fishing. This is also a prime time to catch the bigger sand flathead feeding inside the break.
