Inverloch Fishing Highlights 13th December 2012

13 Dec 2012

The schools of mullet are moving up the Tarwin River with the clean water. Land-based anglers fishing the incoming tide from the platforms are hooking fish to 40 cm. Berley is the secret. Small handfuls of bread crumbs will attract the mullet to your location. Best baits are pipi and pilchard fillets. Amongst the mullet, you will also find some trevally and from the rock wall down to the river mouth.pinkie to 35cm are also following the clean water up river.

On the run out tide, the Estuary Perch are very active at first or last light and on overcast days. Cast your lures at towards the structure. If using soft plastics, be very attentive on the drop. When using hard body lures, your first crank can produce a strike. Natural colors are the best color for soft plastics and suspending hard body lures.

Kayak anglers are having a productive time outside the Venus Bay islands for pinkie snapper to 45cm on pilchards and squid strips. Gummy shark are taking saury, trevally fillets and US squid in areas from the Nolans Bluff through to Horseshoe after dark. If you would like to try a different variety of bait, may I suggest green banana prawns for to target gummy shark. Let me know if you have the same results as we have. Bigger fish!

Schools of mullet and trevally are on the move with the tide throughout the Inlet. The size of flathead are in the 35 to 40cm mark when bait fishing the edges of the channels and flicking soft baits across the flats on the out going tide.

King George Whiting are in good numbers for boaters at Stevies Gutter and the Snags. Land based anglers are having good success at the Old Kiosk Cafe, Pensioners Point and the weed beds east of the Inverloch Jetty. Live bass yabbies, squid strips and fresh pipi are the best baits for fish to 35cm. The larger fish to 50cm are taking pilchard pieces and fillets.

For those anglers not familiar with Anderson Inlet, please refer to our Kayaking and Boating or our Landbased fishing Guides.

The Venus Bay Surf Beaches are very productive around the new moon. Larger Gummy Shark to 5' have been taken about 800 to the left of Beach I and on beaches 3 and 4.Fresh baits are essential with trevally and salmon fillets being the best baits. If you are encountering too many skates and rays with your running sinker rig, I would suggest you use a single dropper rig. This will lift your bait off the bottom and away from the bottom dwellers of the flapping variety. The gummy shark will still be able to smell your bait and will move off the bottom to feed.

Offshore at Inverloch, great catches of Flathead 40cm plus on the drift towards the Venus Bay Beaches. You will also pick up some meter plus gummy shark. Big arrow squid off Petral Rock.

Enjoy your fishing.
