What a week of east winds! So you want to fish and get out of the wind....where do I fish?
Tarwin River...whether it be land-based, from your kayak or boat, you will find protection heading up river from the Tarwin Boat ramp. From the fishing platforms, you can target mullet, trevally amd small salmon on the incoming tide using pipi, worm or white-bait. As the tide turns, use live bass yabbies in close to the bank to target Estuary Perch. Kayakers push up stream with the tide past the bridge and drift back with the run-out tide spinning your favourite vibe, soft plastic or hard lure. Squidgee Wriggler in bloodworm an essential to have in your lure box.
Screw Creek...land-based, live bass yabbies are the best bait. Frozen beach worm and peeled prawns under a float has been the best set up. If you wish to fish from a kayak, keep it simple and don't overload your kayak. You will park at the end of the foreshore camping ground and have to lift your kayak over a gate. Then wheel it to the mouth, launch and head up river. Troll a vibe on the way and target the one off snags for the bigger estauary perch and bream. You will notice on the bends deeper holes that are worth targeting. Also on the sunny days, the shadows form the gum trees can be very fruitful.
Venus Bay Surf Beaches...the east wind is an off-shore wind that will produce a clean break. As the swell drops off, fishing around the high tide will keep you well protected by the sand dunes. And you will have the wind behind you to get maximum distance from your cast. As the tide runs out, you will be more exposed to the wind as you move further out onto the beach towards the low tide mark.
The off-shore wind disturbs the pipi and they will be rolling around in the waves providing a good food source close to shore. Target gummy shark at dawn and dusk using trevally fillets, squid heads and saury.
