Surf Fishing Opportunitities 3rd May 2013

03 May 2013

Strong winds from the south west bring the schools of Australian Salmon closer to the surf beaches and into the estuaries along the southern coast of Victoria. And that is going to happen tommorrow.

So plan to fish from Sunday 5th onwards. The high tides are corresponding with first and last light which makes the afternoon sessions more appealing.

Kayakers have been smashing the salmon in the main channel into Anderson Inlet. The schools are on the edges of the channels and in some cases are in as little as 4 feet of water.

Land based, fishing from the point at the mouth of Anderson Inlet is also very productive. Spinning metal lures around the tides has been the most popular approach.

Venus Bay Beach 1 and 4 are the areas to target. Already, salmon to 2kg are being taken on larger poppers, blue bait, pilchard pieces and chicken fillet. Whilst fishing the afternoon high tides, don't leave the beach too early. Take your headlamps, glow sticks and torches to fish at least 3 hours of the run out tide. The reward can be a nice gummy (the gummy in the picture was size but on the lean side and was released successfully).

As soon as the tide starts to run out, release your berley, use a fresh salmon fillet, trevally, whole pilchard or whole squid on a running sinker rig.

Footnote: That same night, a crew from Seaford fished using Snapper Snatchers with small stripped baits on Beach 4. They landed two healthy flathead to 1.5kg. I believe the slight sidewards drift that night assisted in attracting the flathead to the moving baits.
