Estuary Perch have been a major target fish in Anderson Inlet over the last week. The best results have been around the Venus Bay Islands, the mouth to the Tarwin River and above the highway bridge. The best bait is live bass yabbies and a variety of soft and hard lures doing the job. The Atomic Crank 38 Mid Diver in Muddy Prawn is a stand-out hard body. At the rock wall between Tarwin Lower and Venus Bay, either half tide is producing Bream to 35cm also on bass yabbies. Be prepared to angler the bigger fish away from the rocks.
The secret to good catches of King George Whiting is to get to the prime locations at first light before the peak of holiday water activities. Best baits are live bass yabbies, pipi, squid strips and pilchard fillets.Stevies Gutter is producing fish to 45cm and the shell bank and weedbed out the front of The Inverloch Boat Hire at Mahers Landing.
East of Mahers Landing is the best location for Gummy Shark activity with many fish around the metre mark. The best baits are Saury, trevally fillets and US Squid.
The Tarwin River has many large schools of 35cm mullet busting the surface as they move with the tide. When this occurs, it is time to start targeting Mulloway. Have a heavy set-up in the car and a range of larger soft plastics, mid range diving XRaps and bigger vibes to attract this elusive fish. Also use berley to catch a couple of 20-25cm mullet for live baiting.
The night time gummy activity on the Venus Bay Beaches has been sensational on the run out tide. During this period, when using a running sinker set up, don't be surprised to catch some flathead in the 40-50cm range. Best baits are the same as for fishing Mahers Landing. On the run in tide, large schools of mullet can be seen in the waves. A great time of year to introduce your kids to light surf fishing.
Land based at Flatrocks and Cape Paterson, trevally to 1 kg and King George Whiting to 45cm are taking pipi, squid strips and pilchard pieces.
