The pattern of late afternoon tides and big salmon off Pensioners Point continued. Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons produced 2kg fish around the high tide. This also coincided with a high barometer reading of 1030 and north/north-west winds increasing your casting distance. Metal lures 25-40 gram produced the results and some quality fish were taken on blue bait. So when you are planning a trip, I would suggest you consider the Wednesday 16th July through to Sunday 20th to spin off Pensioners Point. When the tides are during the day, Venus Bay Surf Beach is a great option. Blue Bait, surf poppers and spinning lures will produce fish 2 hours either side of the high tide.

A pattern is evolving for the schools of salmon coming into Anderson Inlet. Late afternoon high tides with overcast conditions or falling light. Again, the salmon were within reach of land-based lure anglers at Pensioners Point. Spinning from the shore using 9', 4-6kg rods and 4000 sized reels with 25-40 gram metal lure produced results again yesterday. Salmon to 2 kg were caught in good numbers. A high barameter reading of 1030 also would have contributed to feisty feeding of the schools. The rest of this week should continue be a great opportunity to target land-based salmon in the Anderson Inlet and off the surf beaches of Kilcunda, Wonthaggi and Venus Bay.

We conducted our first Surf Fishing Clinic on the Venus Bay Beach 1 on Saturday 31st May 2014. Start time was 10am with 5 adults and 2 kids attending. The aim of the clinic was to cover reading the beach, safety, casting, rigging, bait and lure fishing  and looking after your catch. At 10 am, it was 2 hours into the run in tide. This was perfect to highlight how the incoming tide was to work from the major hole on Beach 1 and flow along the gutter to the north. Photo 1 (below) shows the deep low tide hole, which was producing many mullet and small salmon on pipi.

After a couple of weeks of hit or miss land-based salmon action, they have returned back into Anderson Inlet. Once again, Pensioners Point was the hot spot. Fish to 2.5 kg were taken yesterday on the last of the run in tide and the run out tide through to dusk. This morning, the action continued on the run in tide. Pearl and white metal lures did the job in the overcast conditions with fish to 2 kg being landed. Turi again had a great morning with a 3 fish bag that weighed 4kg. Take advantage of the unseasonal warm spell and get amongst it.

Spinning for Salmon on 4-6 kg outfits off the inlet beaches is great fun and also keeps you warm on these bitter days. This is the Searock 25 gram lure that is producing the best results. Notice the "glow in the dark" belly of the lure. Cahrged with a UV light, this lure will be very effective fishing around the dirty water on first and last lights. If you catch and release, I would suggest you change the trebles over to single hooks such as the Gamakatsu  Single Lure Hooks. You may also have pearl colored Lazer Lures or other metal slugs in pearl/white that can be equally effective.

After a good Sth Gippsland blow this week from the south west, the schools of Salmon have moved along the shore at Pensioners Point. Local, Turi, landed 10 fish this morning to 1.5 kg using Searock metal lures. The secret to his catch was the color today....pearl/silver white in color. Keep a close eye on the breaks in the weather reports. There will plenty of opportunities later next week when this series of fronts pass through. Rug up and keep warm!

I enjoy seeing fathers taking an interest in getting their kids outdoors in search of adventure. Eddie and his son Samual are on holidays to enjoy some fishing in their boat. They also had a plan...for Samual to catch his first Estuary Perch on a lure. We suggested the Venus Bay Islands and a few tactics. They did that and more. Thanks for the correspondance and the pictures. Well done guys!   Email received 17th April 2014 Hi

This morning Australian Salmon to 55cm were in the channel off Pensioners Point. Being first light and around the low tide, spinning metal lures from the shore will reached the school. Observe the surface water and cast towards the areas being disturbed by the salmon. All the metal lures (15-25 gram) used, had the trebles removed and changed over to single hooks for a better hook-up rate.
